Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Trust

Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Trust, based in Zambia’s Copperbelt Province, is one of the world’s largest and most respected chimpanzee sanctuaries. Founded in 1983, it provides lifelong care to more than 150 rescued chimpanzees alongside other native wildlife. The sanctuary safeguards over 10,000 hectares of Miombo woodland and floodplains, preserving vital ecosystems while reducing pressures from deforestation and human-wildlife conflict.

Chimfunshi’s mission extends far beyond animal rescue: It is a hub for conservation, education, and community development. Through its conservation agriculture program, local farmers are trained in climate-smart practices that improve food security, diversify incomes, and promote sustainable land use. The Chimfunshi Community School educates more than 250 children from ECE to Grade 9, weaving environmental awareness and self-reliance into the curriculum. Recognized internationally for its pioneering role in great ape welfare and conservation, Chimfunshi demonstrates how wildlife protection, community empowerment, and sustainable development can thrive together in harmony.
